Federal Financial Aid General Eligibility:

for any federal financial aid you must:

or the equivalent

USA
citizen or be a permanent resident alien (have a "green card")

Dependent
and Independent Student Status:
Your dependency status
determines which student loans you may borrow and whether you must submit your parent's
financial information on your aid application. For purposes of qualifying for federal
aid, you are a Dependent Student if all of the following apply to you:
•
your birth year is between
1980 and 1985 (inclusive)
•
you are unmarried
•
you are not a veteran
of the U.S. Armed Forces
•
you are not an orphan
•
you have no children
(or other dependents) who receive more than half of their support from you
If any of the above
do not apply to you, you are considered an Independent Student.
Grants:
The Federal Pell
Grant program provides limited awards to students who meet strict financial criteria
and do not have a Bachelor's degree. You do not have to pay back a Pell Grant.
Loans:
The base Stafford Loan
is available to all eligible students through the Federal Family Education Loan Program
(FFELP) or the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (Direct Loans). No principal
payments are due on the Stafford Loan while you are in school.
For Students with sufficient financial need, the base
Stafford
is subsidized (meaning the federal government pays the interest while you are in school).
Otherwise it is unsubsidized.
If you are an Independent Student, you can borrow both the base Stafford Loan and
an additional unsubsidized Stafford Loan. If you are a Dependent Student, you are
not eligible for he additional unsubsidized Stafford Loan. Instead, your parents'
may borrow the PLUS Loan to assist you. PLUS Loans always involve a credit check,
and repayment usually begins thirty days after the loan is fully disbursed.
Application:
The steps to apply for
federal aid are covered in the Financial Aid packet which you will be given during
your personal interview. To complete the forms, you will need your 2005 federal income
tax return (and your parents' 2005 tax forms if you are a Dependent Student.) If there
are at least two weeks remaining before your interview, you could begin your financial
aid application on-line.
